The best smart home devices for the bedroom — gentle wake-up lights, sleep-friendly automations and comfort controls that require zero effort.

The bedroom is a different challenge to the rest of the house. The goal is not convenience or entertainment — it is reducing friction at the moments when you are least alert. Lights that adjust automatically, alarms that feel less jarring and a room that is the right temperature when you wake up.

Wake-up lighting

A smart bulb configured to gradually brighten before your alarm time is one of the more genuinely useful smart home automations. It simulates sunrise, which makes waking up noticeably easier than a standard alarm in a dark room.

Philips Hue White Ambiance bulbs support tunable colour temperature and work with both Alexa and Google Home wake-up routines. The Philips Hue Go is a portable bedside lamp with the same capability. LIFX bulbs do the same without needing a hub.

You can configure a sunrise routine directly in the Alexa app (Alexa Routines) or Google Home app without any additional hardware — just a compatible smart bulb.

Smart speaker as bedside alarm

An Amazon Echo Dot or Google Nest Mini on the bedside table lets you set and cancel alarms by voice without picking up your phone. The Amazon Echo Show 5 (3rd gen) is designed for bedside use — compact, with a dedicated night mode that dims significantly and shows a clean clock face.

Smart thermostat and climate

Sleep quality is strongly linked to room temperature. Most people sleep better when the bedroom is slightly cooler at night. A smart thermostat can schedule the temperature to drop an hour before your usual bedtime and rise before your alarm. If you use a portable fan, a smart plug with scheduling achieves the same result at much lower cost.

Window coverings

Smart blinds are one of the more expensive bedroom upgrades but genuinely useful. SwitchBot Curtain 3 clips onto existing curtain rods and automates standard curtains — no replacement required. It is one of the most practical bedroom upgrades for renters. IKEA Fyrtur motorised blinds are the most affordable full-replacement option that integrates with major ecosystems.

Recommended bedroom setup

  • Start with: one smart bulb in the bedside lamp configured for a sunrise routine.
  • Add next: a small bedside smart speaker for voice-controlled alarms and light control.
  • Later: smart switch for the ceiling light, smart thermostat or scheduled fan, motorised blinds.

What to avoid

Avoid overly complex automations in the bedroom. One or two automations that work reliably are more useful than a complicated routine that occasionally fails at the wrong moment. Many people also prefer not to have a camera or microphone-enabled device in the bedroom — this is a reasonable preference. All major smart speakers have a physical mute button that disables the microphone.
