The best smart home devices for building automations — hubs, sensors, smart plugs and more. What you need and where to start.

Home automation means your devices respond to conditions — time of day, your location, motion, sunrise and sunset — without you triggering them manually. The goal is to remove friction from repetitive tasks, not to create a complicated system you have to manage.

Where to start

Most people start with simple time-based automations (lights off at midnight, thermostat adjusts at 7am) and add more as they understand what actually saves time. You don't need a hub to get started — most Wi-Fi devices work with Alexa or Google Home automations directly.

Smart Hubs

A hub becomes useful when you want to use Zigbee or Z-Wave devices (which are more reliable and don't require Wi-Fi per device), or when you want more advanced automations than the standard Alexa and Google Home apps offer.

Best for broad compatibility: Aqara Hub M2. Supports Zigbee devices and Matter, works with Alexa, Google Home and Apple Home.

Best for SmartThings ecosystem: Samsung SmartThings Hub. Strong automation engine, broad device support, works well with Samsung appliances.

Motion Sensors

Motion sensors are the most useful trigger for automations. Lights that turn on when you enter a room and off when you leave are simple and genuinely convenient. Most motion sensors also detect temperature and some detect light levels, giving you more automation options.

Smart Plugs

A smart plug turns any appliance into an automatable device. Coffee maker on at 7am, fan off when you leave the house, Christmas lights on at sunset — all without any special wiring.

Best option: Kasa EP25 with energy monitoring, or the simpler Meross Smart Plug Mini for tight spaces.

Useful automations to set up first

  • Lights on when motion detected, off 5 minutes after no motion (hallways, bathrooms)
  • Good morning routine: lights on, coffee maker starts, thermostat adjusts
  • Lights and plugs off automatically when everyone leaves the house
  • Outdoor lights on at sunset, off at sunrise
  • Phone notification if a door is left open for more than 10 minutes

Matter: the future of compatibility

Matter is a new smart home standard that allows devices from different brands to work together without needing a specific hub or app. If you're building a new setup, prioritise Matter-compatible devices — they give you more flexibility as the ecosystem matures.

What to avoid

Don't try to automate everything at once. Start with one or two routines, use them for a few weeks and then add more. A complex system you don't fully understand is harder to maintain and more likely to malfunction at the wrong moment.
