Smart lighting is usually the first smart home upgrade people make — and for good reason. It's easy to install, immediately noticeable and works reliably. The main decision is whether to go with smart bulbs or smart switches.

Smart Bulbs vs Smart Switches: which to choose

Smart bulbs replace your existing bulbs. You control the bulb directly — colour, brightness, colour temperature. The downside: if someone turns the switch off, the bulb loses power and can't respond to commands.

Smart switches replace your wall switch. Any bulb works with them. Better for rooms with multiple bulbs (one switch controls all), more reliable long-term and don't require anyone to remember not to use the physical switch.

When to choose bulbs: lamps, accent lighting, rooms where you want colour or tunable white light.

When to choose switches: ceiling lights controlled by wall switches, rooms with multiple bulbs, main living areas.

Best Smart Bulbs

Best overall: Philips Hue (A19 Starter Kit). The most reliable smart bulb ecosystem. Excellent app, wide compatibility, works with Alexa, Google Home and Apple Home. Expensive but worth it if you plan to build a larger smart lighting setup.

Best budget option: Tapo L530E (4-pack). Good colour range, simple setup, works with Alexa and Google Home. Missing some advanced features but handles the basics well.

Best mid-range: Sengled Smart Bulb A19 (4-pack). Reliable Wi-Fi bulb with good brightness. No hub required.

Good value 4-pack options: GE Cync and Govee Smart Bulbs. Both offer decent performance at lower prices. Govee has better colour options; GE Cync is simpler and more reliable for basic use.

Best Smart Switches

Best dimmer switch: Lutron Caséta Dimmer. Doesn't require a neutral wire (works in most older homes), extremely reliable, works with Alexa, Google Home and Apple Home. Uses its own hub but that hub is very stable.

Best no-hub option: Kasa HS200. Simple Wi-Fi switch, no hub needed, works with Alexa and Google Home. Not a dimmer but reliable for on/off control.

Best GE option: GE Cync Smart Switch. Works without a hub, good app, Matter-compatible on newer firmware.

Best for Apple Home: Leviton Decora Smart Switch. Works well with HomeKit, straightforward installation.

Tips for setting up smart lighting

• Start with one room and expand. Living room or bedroom are good starting points.
• If using smart switches, check whether your wiring has a neutral wire — most switches need one (Lutron Caséta is the main exception).
• Set schedules before building complex automations. Lights off at midnight, on at sunset — these alone are genuinely useful.
• Colour temperature matters more than colour for daily use. Warm white (2700K) for evenings, cool white (4000K) for work and tasks.
