What to look for in a robot vacuum

• Mapping: models with mapping can clean specific rooms on demand, avoid areas you don't want it to enter and clean more efficiently. Strongly recommended.
• Suction power: more matters if you have thick carpets or pets. Hard floors need much less.
• Auto-empty base: empties the dustbin automatically after each clean. Worth paying for if you don't want to empty it yourself every few days.
• Mopping: combined vacuum-mop models are useful for hard floor homes. Less effective on carpets.

Making the most of your robot vacuum

• Run it every day or every other day — the more frequently it runs, the less it has to pick up each time.
• Clear cables and small items from the floor before the first few runs, until you know what it can handle.
• Set a schedule so it runs while you're out. Coming home to a clean floor is the main appeal.
• Empty the dustbin regularly (or let the auto-empty base handle it) to maintain suction.

Limitations to know

Robot vacuums struggle with high-pile rugs, thick carpet transitions and stairs. They don't replace manual vacuuming entirely — corners, edges and stairs still need attention. They work best as a daily maintenance tool, not a complete cleaning solution.
